Rereading Childhood: Journeys into Female Imagination

Rereading books from my childhood, I discover that what once inspired me now frequently surprises and often amuses and sometimes disturbs and even horrifies me. In particular, the creativity and imagination that features so strongly in the lives of characters in 'favorite' reading like L.M. Montgomery’s Anne series and Eunice Young Smith’s Jennifer stories, reminded me of just how inadequate my abilities once felt in contrast to these heroines’ fanciful creativity. But rereading through modern eyes gives a new and challenging perspective to the appreciation of these classics.
