Morrison contends that both modern literature and academic discourse about it is still bound to the language of patriarchy. While this suggests that feminists should develop a new language to weave into the language taught to children, Heine's text suggests that teaching our children a new language is a much more difficult process than one might think.

David Beagley is Lecturer in Children's Literature and Literacy at La Trobe University's Bendigo campus, Victoria, Australia, where he teaches units in Genres, History, Australian and Post-colonial children's literature. He has previously taught in secondary schools, and has been a school and university librarian.
