Children's Books For and About the Hmong

Children's books for and about the Hmong follow a pattern of the same literary development as those of previous immigrants and refugees who came to the United States of America. However, their oral language was written down and codified for the first time only recently, in the 1950s. This, and the tragic aftermath of the Vietnam War, mean that texts for, by and about the Hmong are only now just starting to be produced.

Kavid Beagley is Lecturer in Children's Literature and Literacy at La Trobe University's Bendigo campus, Victoria, Australia, where he teaches units in Genres, History, Australian and Post-colonial children's literature. He has previously taught in secondary schools, and has been a school and university librarian.
